Well after a relatively dry few months the weather has certainly changed! At Home Farm we’ve moved the cattle onto dryer ground in fields that have good shelter from the winds so that they can race through the valley as they please.
We’ve also now weaned this year’s calves from their mothers which gives us the opportunity to put them into heifer, steer and size groups. This means all the smaller animals will get their fair share of feed over the winter and not be pushed around by some of the bigger yearlings!
As well as the hay and silage, we’ll also put some vitamin blocks out for them to lick to give an extra boost going into the colder months. Not that they need it – the Hereford’s and Aberdeen Angus are already looking like small woolly mammoths!
